Google Camera’s Night Sight mode is out for Pixel phones: Here’s what it does

Night Sight is now officially rolled out to Pixel, Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 phones, and will roll out to these devices over the next couple of days.

Google Camera’s Night Sight mode is out for Pixel phones Here’s what it does

When Google released the Pixel 3 phones back in October, it had showcased a new camera mode called ‘Night Sight’, which promised to drastically improve low-light performance. Night Sight is now officially rolling out to Pixel, Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 phones, and will be made available on these devices over the next couple of days.
At the launch event, Google showcased two pictures side-by-side, one taken by the iPhone XS and the other with Pixel 3’s Night Sight mode. The difference in the two shots was striking; the one with the iPhone XS was dark, unclear, a typical smartphone camera shot in low-light,  while the Pixel 3 had managed to convert the shot into a bright, well-lit one with the subjects clearly visible.
Google itself says that Night Sight works best on the latest Pixel 3. On the original Pixel, Google’s Night Sight will rely on shorter exposures compared to the other two, because the first phone did not come with optical image stabilization (OIS). Pixel users might not immediately see the update on their phones. The Google Camera app will get an official update on the Play Store, which will include the new Night Sight Mode.

Google Camera: What is Night Sight mode, how does it work?

The Night Sight Mode is coming to both the front and rear camera of all Pixel phones. It gives detailed low-light results without the need for a flash or tripod. When a smartphone camera is taking pictures in the dark or poor lighting conditions, often the end result has a lot of noise or the picture is grainy. This is despite smartphone cameras touting big sensors, improved aperture.
To take well-lit photos at night, similar to say how a DSLR would perform, one would require some help on the hardware side. Also, a tripod can help because in low-light the exposure time is longer, and the camera needs to remain still for that duration. But it is not always possible on smartphones, and the average user certainly does not want to lug a tripod along. Then, there’s the use of flash though that does not often result in flattering results, in low-light.
The Night Sight Mode is coming to both the front and rear camera of all Pixel phones.

Pixel’s Night Mode makes sure you do not need any extra hardware help to capture a great low-light shot. It relies on software to improve your photos.
In Night Sight, the Pixel camera captures 15 frames of 1/15 second (or less) each.  Night Sight captures an equal amount of light over a burst of many photos that are dark but sharp, according to the company. This is also why the user needs to be very still when shooting in Night Sight because it takes two or three seconds for the camera to take the number of shots needed for the perfect image.
The camera software then merges this burst, and also tries to prevent motion blur to give a bright, sharp image as the final result. Still Night Sight works best when you are completely still or prop the camera against something to keep it very still
When a user shoots in Night Sight, the Pixel does try to eliminate for noise, movement, according to Google. The camera measures a user’s natural hand shake, as well as how much motion is in the scene. It is relying more on software to compensate for the movement that is often a part of smartphone pictures.
“If Pixel is stable and the scene is still, Night Sight will spend more time capturing light to minimise noise; if Pixel is moving or there’s significant scene motion, Night Sight will use shorter exposures, capturing less light to minimize motion blur,” according to Google’s blog.
Google is also using machine learning to help balance the colour of photos taken in Night Sight in order to make sure object appear natural.
Further, in this mode, Google brightens the viewfinder to help users frame shots in low light. Keep in mind that viewfinder might show that the shot is noisy, but this is not the correct indication of the final photograph. The final pictures merges a number of shots taken together.

How to use Night Sight on Google Pixel, Pixel 2 or Pixel 3?

Google’s Pixel will suggest using Night Sight if you are taking a photo in low-light. The Night Sight Mode is part of the More options on the Google Camera app.
Make sure you have updated your app to the latest version in order to use the Night Sight Mode.
Once you are in Night Sight Mode, just press the shutter button, and try to remain very still until Night Sight finishes capturing the photo. Remember, since the picture is taken in low-light with a longer exposure time, this mode does take a few extra seconds.
If you are taking a photo of someone, ask them to hold still for a few seconds before and after you press the shutter button. Do keep in mind that Night Sight does not work in complete darkness, so the scene needs some light falling on it at the very least.

Facebook Messenger now lets you unsend messages

Facebook Messenger now lets you unsend messages

Back in April, we reported that Facebook was planning to implement a feature in Messenger to let you unsend messages. After multiple trials, the feature has now been rolled out to users in a few countries.
The ‘unsend’ feature for Messenger was promised seven months ago when Facebook secretly removed some private messages sent by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In the past few weeks, screenshots of the new feature surfaced along with an updated preview that was released last week.

Did you know we have a cryptocurrency and blockchain event?

It’s called Hard Fork Decentralized
At the moment, the new feature is available only for users in Colombia, Poland, Bolivia, and Lithuania; it’s expected to be rolled out to other parts of the world soon.
You can use the new feature to remove a message from recipients’ inboxes within 10 minutes of sending it. After that time limit, you can still delete the message from your window, but it will remain in the recipients’ inboxes.
But even after deleting a message, Facebook will retain it a little longer to check if it has been marked for abuse.
Facebook is also reportedly working on related features, such as the ability to set messages or chat logs to expire after a marked period of time. While these might indeed come in handy for maintaining your privacy, Facebook must also ensure that the feature doesn’t empower bullying.
As Facebook’s head of Messenger Stan Chudnowsky noted in his interview with TechCrunch:
We need to make sure we don’t open up any new venues for bullying. We need to make sure people aren’t sending you bad messages and then removing them because if you report them and the messages aren’t there we can’t do anything

However, the new feature is different from the one used to delete Zuckerberg’s old messages seven months ago. Then, the messages deleted were not restricted by a time limit of 10 minutes, and a “tombstone”- a note indicating that a message was deleted – was also not left behind. So that still remains a showcase of privilege that the masses can’t enjoy.
What causes you to use or wish for an unsend button in messaging apps most often? Let us know in the comments.

Entry-level Galaxy S10 to have Infinity-O screen, side-placed fingerprint scanner

Entry-level Galaxy S10 to have Infinity-O screen, side-placed fingerprint scanner

Samsung should announce a trio of new Galaxy S10 flaghips next year - two models with curved 5.8-inch and 6.44-inch displays - and a third with a flat 5.8-inch display. Thanks to leaker Ben Geskin we may have some new clues to clarify that last one.

Dubbed the budget Galaxy S10 with model number SM-G970F, the most basic device in the lineup will have a flat Infinity-O display, a fingerprint scanner on the side (not an in-display one), a dual camera and come with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM coupled to 64GB or 128GB of storage.
According to Geskin the budget Galaxy S10 may even carry a 2018 Snapdragon 845 chipset. Samsung could ask as little as $650 for the phone, which would put it in direct contention with devices like the OnePlus 6T.
If these rumors pan out, then we could be looking at a large disparity between the budget Galaxy S10 and its more expensive counterparts. They are rumored to offer curved Infinity-O displays, in-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanners, three cameras (one standard, one ultra wide and a telephoto one) and likely much higher starting prices.

WhatsApp users alert! 5 features introduced by Facebook-owned app you may have missed

Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has had a busy 2018 so far. The company has introduced many new features for its users this year including group video and voice calling, stickers support, and even a payments option. Some of these features like WhatsApp Stickers have become hugely popular among the users. The online messaging platform has been under pressure to fight the spread of fake news on its platform and has taken solid steps in that regard too.
While some features have already been rolled out for users to improve their experience, some were spotted in the testing stage. WhatsApp is reportedly working on “Vacation Mode” that makes archived chats that have been muted, to remain archived when a new message arrives in those chats. WABetaInfo also spotted a Linked Accounts feature that will let users link their account with external services.
While active users may be aware of many of these features, for those who missed a few, here is a list of what WhatsApp has recently introduced –
WhatsApp Stickers
The Stickers support for all Android and iPhone users was rolled out late last month. The feature was actively used in India as WhatsApp introduced a special sticker pack for Diwali. The users can also download sticker packs directly from Google Play, apart from using the default stickers provided by the app.
The feature was made available to all the users in the latest version of the app. In case you haven’t got the feature yet, here is how you can get it –
What came as a major relief from unwanted messages, WhatsApp introduced a new “Silent Mode” that hides the notification dots for muted chats. This means that users don’t see how many messages they have received in a muted chat. The new feature is enabled in the app by default and cannot be applied or removed manually.
The feature was first introduced for iPhone users and then, was made available for the Android users as well. The feature helps WhatsApp users to quickly reply to messages by simply swiping on a chat. Previously, the users had to tap on the chat and open it to reply to the messages.
The feature was introduced for the Android users with its beta version 2.18.355. It allows users to privately send messages to a participant in a group without letting others in the same group know. To use this feature, the users need to tap the message of the sender, click the three-dotted menu on the top right corner and select the Private Reply option.
WhatsApp Group video, voice calling
The feature allows a maximum of four people to make group voice and video calls. It is available for both Android and iPhone users.

Samsung's Foldable Smartphone Tipped to Launch in March, Priced Upwards of Rs. 1,20,000

Samsung's Foldable Smartphone Tipped to Launch in March, Priced Upwards of Rs. 1,20,000

Samsung plans to launch its first foldable smartphone in March, along with 5G-enabled Galaxy S10, a report claimed on Monday, citing industry sources. The report also tips the price of the foldable smartphone, and also cites the company's mobile chief to claim its initial production volume.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that Samsung plans to unveil its Galaxy S10 flagship in February, followed by the recently confirmed foldable smartphone - expected to be called the Galaxy F - in March. The foldable smartphone will be launched alongside a 5G variant of the Galaxy S10, the report adds.
The report adds that the price of the foldable smartphone has not been decided by Samsung, but cites industry watchers to claim it can be expected to cost around KRW 2 million (roughly $1,770 or Rs. 1,29,100). The steep price is expected to limit sales.
This information was rumoured after Samsung Electronics President Koh Dong-jin, who heads the mobile business, said last week that the company will release a foldable smartphone within the first half of 2019. Koh said the shipment volume of the foldable smartphone will be at least 1 million.
Yonhap adds that Industry watchers said Samsung is expected to showcase the upcoming foldable smartphone in the Mobile World Congress in February, ahead of the official launch in the following month. The foldable smartphone is not expected to support the 5G network however, unlike the 5G variant of the Galaxy S10 rumoured to launch in the same time-frame.
To recall, Samsung unveiled a foldable smartphone prototype at its Samsung Developer Conference keynote last week, and Google also tipped that it would arrive in early 2019 - this time-frame matches what Yonhap is reporting. Samsung had revealed the upcoming foldable smartphone will fold inward and will sport a 7.4-inch screen when unfolded and have a 4.6-inch display like a regular smartphone when folded.
