Apple Will Stop Reporting iPhone Unit Sales; Forecast Underwhelms

Apple Will Stop Reporting iPhone Unit Sales; Forecast Underwhelms

Apple Inc. gave an underwhelming forecast for the key holiday period suggesting weaker-than-expected demand for pricier new iPhones. The company further stoked concerns by saying it will stop reporting unit sales of its most-important product.

Apple shares fell about 7 percent in extended trading on Thursday. The stock closed at $222.22 in New York, leaving it up 31 percent this year. Apple suppliers declined after the report.
The Cupertino, California-based technology giant expects fiscal first-quarter 2019 revenue to be between $89 billion and $93 billion. Analysts were looking for $92.7 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said the forecast was partly driven by weakness in emerging markets, including India and Brazil, and currency volatility.
Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said the company will stop reporting unit sales for iPhones, iPads, and Macs beginning in fiscal 2019. That sparked concern Apple wants to avoid disclosing weak growth numbers. But the move also highlights the company’s desire to become more of a services business.
"I was shocked, but it makes sense," said Gene Munster, a veteran Apple analyst at Loup Ventures. "Apple wants investors to focus less on iPhone units, and more on the overall Apple business. It’s going to take a few quarters for Apple to win investor confidence in this new way of analyzing the Apple story."
In the fiscal fourth quarter, iPhone unit sales barely grew from a year earlier, even though new flagship iPhones came out in the period. That was a disappointment, considering there were no big iPhone launches in the same period last year.
The company sold 46.9 million iPhones in the quarter, generating revenue of $37.2 billion. The period included about a week and a half of sales of the high-end iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max models. The average iPhone selling price was $793. Analysts were looking for 48.4 million iPhone units in the quarter, and an average selling price of $729.
The company released new iPhones in September, and upgraded iPads and Macs were introduced earlier this week. Apple raised prices on most of the devices, a relatively recent strategy to offset slowing unit sales growth. It’s a bet that consumers will continue to pay up for access to the company’s specialized and tightly integrated hardware and software.
The iPhone XR is one of the few outliers from the trend of more costly Apple gadgets. With a starting price of $749, it’s expected to be a popular holiday gift, luring owners of older iPhones to upgrade. The iPhone still looms large over Apple’s fortunes, accounting for more than 60 percent of revenues. It’s also the central hub for connecting the other devices and using services.
Apple’s Services business reported a 17 percent increase in revenue to $9.98 billion. Analysts expected $10.18 billion. Apple hasn’t launched any notable new offerings lately in this category, which includes iCloud and Apple Music subscriptions, app downloads, and iTunes video purchases. The company is working on digital newspaper subscriptions and original video content for next year.
Fiscal fourth-quarter sales rose 20 percent to $62.9 billion, Apple said. Profit came in at $2.91 a share. Analysts expected revenue of $61.4 billion and earnings of $2.78 a share.
Before Thursday, Apple shares had withstood a recent tech stock rout. Amazon.com Inc. and Netflix Inc. tumbled about 20 percent each last month as the sector was pummeled by rising interest rates, and concern over the economic outlook and tariffs. Apple’s resilience was all the more impressive considering the company is exposed to China at a time of escalating trade tension with the U.S.
Sales in Greater China came in at $11.4 billion in the quarter, up 16 percent from a year earlier.
The Other Products category saw revenue jump 31 percent to $4.2 billion in revenue, likely on demand for Apple’s Watch.
Mac unit sales surged 42 percent from previous quarter. That’s a nice jump for a category that saw its lowest sales numbers since 2010 in the third quarter. Apple launched new MacBook Pros in July. IPad revenue fell 15 percent to $4.09 billion from a year earlier.

WhatsApp will begin putting ads in Status stories

WhatsApp will begin putting ads in Status stories

Apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are the primary means of communication between users in most of the world. They’re simple to use, and with the advent of smartphones, they’re accessible and available to pretty much everyone.
WhatsApp, in particular, is what I use for most of my daily communications with family, friends, and acquaintances. The Facebook-owned app keeps adding features periodically, most of them unintrusive, but also some that could be considered as intrusive. One of the arguably intrusive ones is the “Status” feature,
which allows users to upload stories just like they would on Instagram or Snapchat, and share them with their WhatsApp contacts.
The feature will, however, start getting even more intrusive, as Facebook plans on shoving ads into WhatsApp statuses. This was confirmed by WhatsApp’s vice president Chris Daniels, who said that the move was a part of Facebook’s monetization efforts for WhatsApp. Since the yearly $0.99 fee was removed, the app has remained ad-free and uncompromised which,
while good for the user, also meant that WhatsApp was generating pretty much zero revenue. Furthermore, according to Mr. Daniels, the move will allow businesses to reach WhatsApp users around the globe—and with billions of users using the app daily, it’s definitely a market Facebook wants to exploit.
The move makes perfect sense from a business perspective: as we said before, the app was not generating any revenue, and Facebook wants to make money from it. But it sucks from a user’s perspective since it means you’re going to get unwanted ads
while looking at your friends’ statuses, and it will likely put off more than one user from looking at statuses. Before Facebook acquired the company in 2014, WhatsApp was strongly againstintroducing ads to the service, standing behind their yearly $0.99 fee—which was since been removed—as the better alternative.
As of now, though, this change has not been implemented, and we’re not sure when will it be implemented, as Mr. Daniels did not give an estimated date. We’re guessing that we’ll probably start seeing ads in the Status feature come 2019.

Trump Threatens Shooting Of Central American Migrants Who Throw Stones

President Donald Trump on Thursday warned that soldiers deployed to the Mexican border could shoot Central American migrants who throw stones at them while attempting to cross illegally.
Trump told journalists at the White House that a group of several thousand migrants attempting to walk from Central America through Mexico had thrown rocks "viciously and violently" at Mexican police.
"We're not going to put up with that. They want to throw rocks at our military, our military fights back," he said. "I told them (troops) consider it (a rock) a rifle. When they throw rocks like they did at the Mexican military and police, I say consider it a rifle."
Trump spoke during a presentation of his controversial policy on cracking down against what he says is uncontrolled illegal immigration.
He has ramped up the rhetoric daily ahead of next Tuesday's midterm congressional elections, accusing the opposition Democrats of wanting to throw open the borders to floods of "tough people," "rapists" and other types of threats.
The current focus of Trump's repeated claim to be acting against "an invasion" is the dwindling group of a few thousand impoverished migrants trying to get north. They are currently in Mexico, though still far from the US border.
Trump said that from now on the United States will stop its policy of allowing people to claim political asylum at the border unless they have first gone through an official border post.
Those caught at the border will be held in tent camps or other facilities until they can be deported or have their requests approved, he said.
Critics say that such a radical rethink to asylum policies could violate current laws.
But Trump rejected this.
"This is totally legal. No, we're stopping people at the border. This is an invasion, and nobody is even questioning that," he said.
"We'll be doing an executive order sometime next week," he said, giving little further detail.
Despite Trump's increasingly severe warnings of immigration chaos, the government on Wednesday issued figures saying that only about 400,000 people have been apprehended at the border in 2018, down from around 1.6 million in 2000.
Trump said he was not anti-immigrant but wanted immigration to be completely brought under control.
"Mass uncontrolled immigration is especially unfair to the many wonderful law-abiding immigrants already living here who followed the rules and waited their turn," he said. "Some have been waiting for many years. Some have been waiting a long time. They have done everything perfectly, and they are going to come in."

Big blow to Jio! Mukesh Ambani-owned telco loses to Airtel in download speeds OpenSignal

Airtel provided the fastest download speed during June-August, while Reliance Jio topped in terms of 4G availability, an OpenSignal report said on Thursday. OpenSignal specialises in mapping telecom networks and their service quality.
The average download speed of Airtel was 7.53Mbps (megabits per second), followed by Jio in the second place with 5.47Mbps, it said. “Airtel dominated our Download Speed Experience regional awards, coming top in 16 circles and drawing (equal) in two others,” the report said.
The survey showed that Jio, the latest entrant in the Indian telecommunications markets, was the best in terms of 4G network in the country. Jio has managed to achieve an availability score of over 95 per cent in all of India’s regions, said the OpenSignal’s report titled Mobile Network Experience Report India.
“Jio continues to grow from 96.4 per cent to 96.7 per cent in our analysis, particularly remarkable in a relatively new LTE market like India,” it noted. In the second spot for 4G availability was Airtel with a score of 73.99 per cent.
In terms of upload speed, the report showed that Idea topped among the service providers with an average speed of 2.88Mbps, followed by Vodafone with 2.31Mbps.
Reliance Jio also topped on latency experience at 72.20 per cent, the least among the operators, followed by Vodafone which recorded 80.42 per cent latency during July-August. Latency in computing and data connectivity refers to the delay before a transfer of data begins following an instruction for its transfer.
The survey took into account Vodafone and Idea as separate entities despite the recent merger, as the two were operating as separate consumer brands when the survey was conducted, it said. The report also observed that the price war that started with the entry of Jio may shortly come to an end as operators would “move towards the tiered paid data models familiar in the rest of the mobile world’.
“As the price war begins to subside in this maturing market, India’s operators should have more breathing space to focus on other ways to differentiate such as service quality and bundling, as opposed to a race to the bottom on price,” the report said.
The survey analysed over 10.5 billion measurements from 1.7 million devices over 90 days through August, it added.

New iPad Pro obliterates competition on Geekbench

Apple introduced its new iPads with an A12X chipset two days ago and the first benchmarks already started popping. Two listings on Geekbench revealed that the smaller iPad Pro will have 4 GB RAM, while the bigger will sport 6 GB RAM, but what is more impressive is the multi-core score that is around 18,000.

GeekBench 4.1 (single-core)

Higher is better
  • Apple iPad Pro 12.9"5020
  • Apple iPad Pro 11"4987
  • Apple iPhone XS4823
  • Apple iPhone XS Max4777
  • Apple iPhone X4256
The iPad Pro 11” reached 4,987 in the single-core score, which is slightly higher than the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max that was lurking around 4,800. The bigger iPad Pro 12.9"scored similar result as its smaller sibling - 5,020. The increase for a single core is not that big, compared with the regular A12 Bionic. The difference is multiple cores is much more impressive, though.

GeekBench 4.1 (multi-core)

Higher is better
  • Apple iPad Pro 12.9"18217
  • Apple iPad Pro 11"17928
  • Apple iPhone XS11472
  • Apple iPhone XS Max11432
  • Apple iPhone X10215
The new tablets with the updated chipset recorded more than 50% increase in performance, smashing to pieces any competition left. We didn’t want to include devices with Snapdragon 845 because at that point it is simply not fair - devices like the OnePlus 6T or the Samsung Galaxy Note9 barely reached a score of 9,000, while the Kirin 980-powered Mate 20 Pro can go as high as 9,800.
The new iPads are available for pre-order at Apple and various retailers and carriers like Verizon. Prices start from $799 and $999 and go up to $1,899 if you want the bigger screen with 1 TB storage and Cellular network connectivity. Sales begin on November 7.
