Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) comes to India on November 20

The Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) is coming to India. Samsung sent out invites for November 20 and given that Flipkart already has a landing page, pre-orders should start on the day of the launch or very shortly after that.

Samsung is mum on pricing, but people in the know claim that it will cost INR 35,000, though earlier reports had it pegged at INR 39,000. That’s close to the price of the newly launched OnePlus 6T (INR 38,000). Like the 6T, the Samsung comes with 128GB of storage and is a dual SIM phone, but it also has a dedicated spot for a microSD card. And a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Galaxy A9 is the world’s first quad-camera phone, you can see what each camera does in the diagram below. You can see camera samples from the phone and more in our hands-on review.

WhatsApp to Get 'Share Contact Info via QR' Feature, Easier New Contact Functionality: Report

  • WhatsApp is found to bring a 'Share Contact Info via QR' feature
  • The feature was spotted on iOS, though it could arrive on Android as well
  • WhatsApp team is also reportedly easing the new contact functionality
  • While WhatsApp is busy in enhancing stickers on its platform by adding a dedicated search feature and the ability to create custom stickers, the instant messaging app is rumoured to bring an ability to let users share their contact information via a QR code. This sounds similar to the Nametag feature available on Instagram for some time. It is also reported that WhatsApp is in plans to bring an easier way to let users add a new contact directly from the app.
WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is working on a feature called "Share Contact Info via QR" that will let users share their contact details to other WhatsApp users via a QR code. The feature would work similar to how the Nametag feature works on Instagram or how Snapcode works on Snapchat. WABetaInfo folks have shared a few screenshots to detail the advanced contact-sharing feature.
The screenshots show that users will be able to add a new contact on WhatsApp by simply scanning the QR code of that contact. Once the app detects and recognises the QR code correctly, it will fill all the fields and then add the contact in the address book without any external efforts. Similar is the case if you want others to add your contact details to their address book. It is also said that WhatsApp will provide you with the ability to revoke your QR code.
  • WABetaInfo claims that the feature was spotted on iOS, though it will be available on Android in future. We weren't able to see its presence on any of our iOS devices. Moreover, the feature is likely to be useful especially for businesses as they'll be able to publish their QR code directly on their websites or in their shops. This could help them receive payments or add their customers for future communications. It is worth noting here that WhatsApp already has its dedicated business app for SMBs, and WhatsApp Payments are already taking on apps such as Paytm, which also offers QR codes of its users for easy connectivity.
Alongside the Share Contact Info via QR, WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is redesigning the functionality to add a new contact through its app on Android and iOS. There will reportedly be a simple and intuitive interface that will automatically insert the country code once you choose the country of the new contact. Also, once you've entered the phone number, it will show whether the new contact is already a WhatsApp user. It will show a "Not on WhatsApp" label just below the phone number of the contact if that isn't on WhatsApp yet.

  • The new feature is said to replace the existing 'New contact' shortcut that made way to Android in Maya long time after being available on iOS.
WABetaInfo says that both new features aren't available on Android and iOS, though the WhatsApp team is working on the features for a few weeks. We may need to wait for sometime to experience their scope through an alpha or beta release of WhatsApp.

10 Large Lifts Will Zoom Tourists To Statue Of Unity Viewing Gallery

10 Large Lifts Will Zoom Tourists To Statue Of Unity Viewing Gallery

The Mumbai-based vertical transport solutions provider Otis India has installed 10 large lifts to zoom tourists onto the viewing gallery of the Statue of Unity, inaugurated recently in Gujarat, an official said here on Thursday.
Each lift, with a capacity of 26 passengers, takes around half-a-minute (30 seconds) to rise 400 feet to the viewers' enclosure on the chest of world's tallest statue (182 m) of India's first Deputy Prime Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Otis India President Sebi Joseph said.
Of the 10, one is the high-speed Skyrise elevator which hurtles upwards at a speed of four metres per second, besides two other high-speed elevators which take up the visitors from the core of the gigantic statue, which has now become a tourist landmark.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Statue of Unity to the nation on October 31, the foundation stone of which he had laid as the Gujarat Chief Minister in 2013 at the Sadhu Bet river island facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the River Narmada.
"The Statue of Unity, apart from being a symbol of national pride, is a tribute to India's engineering skills and project management abilities," said S.N. Subrahmanyan, CEO and Managing Director, L&T, which constructed the statue out of the iron collected from half a million Indian farmers donating their used farming equipment.
Otis Asia-Pacific President Stephane de Montlivault said it was an honour for the 165-year-old company to work on the Statue of Unity and it adds to its list of lifts for globally famed structures like the Statue of Christ The Redeemer (Brazil), Eiffel Tower (Paris), Burj Khalifa (Dubai), Petronas Twin Towers (Malaysia) and Empire State Building (USA), among others.
The statue has been designed by renowned Indian sculptor Ram V. Suthar, 93, of Maharashtra, who has designed 50 other monumental structures including statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Maharaja Ranjit Singh and G.B. Pant, among others.
The Statue of Unity complex is spread across 20,000 square metres and has a public plaza overlooking the river, food stalls, laser-light and sound show, gardens, hotel and convention hall, amusement park, research centres and a museum besides a memorial and exhibition depicting the life and times of Sardar Patel.

How to Use Instagram's 'Your Activity' Feature to Curb Your App Usage

How to Use Instagram's 'Your Activity' Feature to Curb Your App Usage

Earlier this year I finally fell down the rabbit hole that is Instagram Stories, and now I spend way too much time on Instagram. This week, the app started rolling out a new feature to combat Insta-addiction, a “Your Activity” tracker that shows you how much time you spend in the app, and lets you set limits to help reduce the number of hours you pour into scrolling you feed each day.

To find the new feature, launch the Instagram app, go to your profile page, and then tap the hamburger icon (the three lines stacked on top of each other) on the top right side of your screen. From there, tap “Your Activity” to launch the feature and tweak your settings.
If you’re an avid Instagram user, you’ll want to brace yourself. You’ll first see a graph of how much time you’ve spent in the app over the past week, as well as an average for the week:
If that number is too high (it probably is), Instagram offers a few options to help you reduce it. Tap “Notification Settings” to customize which push notifications you want the app to send you, which can help prevent you from getting sucked into the ‘gram when you need to be working on something else. Tap the “Set Daily Reminder” option to get a special notification when you’ve surpassed a daily time limit you’ve set for yourself in the app.
If you don’t see the “Your Activity” tracker on your Instagram app, make sure you’re running its latest version. It’s also possible that it hasn’t rolled out to you yet—I didn’t have it on my Android app, but my Lifehacker colleague had it on his iOS app, for example.
While you’re waiting, consider exploring the similar tool that Facebook (Instagram’s owner) has deployed within its social networking apps. Pull up your Settings menu in Facebook, scroll down, and you should see a “Your Time on Facebook” option that will give you the same information—and more customization—as Instagram’s activity tracker.
