Apple has revealed a repair program for the iPhone X (2017) with touch issues as well as the MacBook Pro 13-inch which had an issue with the solid-state drive (SSD). The issue was first reported by Bloomberg and Apple later confirmed that the problem did exist. Apple now has a support page live for both the devices.
In case of the iPhone X, Apple says the touch issues are “due to a component that might fail on the display module.” Apple has not confirmed how many devices are impacted by this problem. According to the support page, if your iPhone X’s display, or part of the display does not respond intermittently to touch, then it could be one of the faulty units
Also if the display reacts even though it was not touched, indicates that there is a problem with the touch component on the iPhone X’s display. Apple is letting users get the display of their iPhone replaced free for recharge from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Apple says no other iPhone models are part of this program. For those who wish to get their iPhone X fixed under the program, they should note that the iPhone will be examined in order to verify that it is eligible for this program.
Apple recommends that users backup their iPhone X to iTunes or iCloud before handing over their device for repair. Also the program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the iPhone X. Further if the iPhone X has any damage which impairs the ability to complete the repair, such as a cracked screen, the service centre will need to fix that first, which will not be free.
The repair program covers affected iPhone X devices for 3 years after the first retail sale of the unit, according to Apple’s support page.
Coming to the MacBook Pro in 13-inch with non Touch bar, Apple has determined that a limited number of models with 128GB and 256GB solid-state drives (SSD) have an issue that results in data loss and failure of the drive. Apple says MacBook Pro units with affected drives were sold between June 2017 and June 2018.
Apple will also service these SSDS free of charge. The company is also sending send an email to customers, who registered their device with Apple, to let them know about this program.
However, users have to first check if their MacBook Pro is eligible for the program. They can check the serial number of the MacBook Pro and enter it on the support page in order to know if they qualify for the program.
This program does not affect 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar or older 13-inch MacBook Pro models. Once again if you are sending the impacted MacBook Pro for service, backup your data as the drive will be erased as part of the service process. According to the company, the whole process of updating the drive’s firmware will take approximately one hour or less.
